Spain - Toledo - Day Trip - Winter 2015
During our trip in Madrid, we joined a tour to go to Toledo. Toledo was the former capital of Spain. From what I recall from the tour, Toledo was growing and they eventually relocated the capital to Madrid. Toledo is the first city that I was part of a tour where I visited a mosque, church and synagogue.
Interesting thing about walking through Toledo is seeing the Christian, Muslim and Jewish influences in the buildings. We were told by our guide that the religions were able to coexist in Toledo. Toledo is also surrounded by water, which would have helped during invasions but would have limited the expansion of the city.
Places of interest during the tour
Catedral Primada Toledo
Iglesia de San IIdefonso Jesuitas
Iglesia de Santo Tomé - famous painting called The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
Mosque of Christ of the Light - former mosque which was changed to a Catholic church.
Victorio Macho Museum - we did not tour the rest of the museum but we watch the movie Toledo time capsule
Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca
Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
Our tour guide explained many things about a famous artist born in Greece, who is nicknamed El Greco. During our tour we were able to see his art work from Catedral Primada to Iglesia de Santo Tomé.
I am writing this after about ten months, so it is difficult for me to remember the details of the information said during the tour. My tour guide was so informative (sadly I seem to have forgotten many things, and I do not want to say anything in case it is incorrect). I feel that Toledo is a great place to have a tour guide because we were guided the entire time until lunch time. Then we were given time to have lunch and meet up to leave Toledo. I am glad that experiencing a half day trip to Toledo, you can compare the difference between Toledo and Madrid.

Within Toledo, you can see symbols from each of the religions. It is to symbolize that they had coexisted together
